Our Story

The Legacy Theatre of Excellence began as a vision from Executive Artistic Director Torrey Russell — a dream to create a space where creativity, culture, and community could live under one roof and is accessible to everyone.

For more than fifteen years, that vision guided the work of Broadway in the HOOD, an organization committed to providing youth and families with free access to professional theatre training and life-changing opportunities in the arts. Through hundreds of performances, workshops, and outreach programs, the need for a permanent home grew stronger and clearer.

The Legacy Theatre of Excellence stands proudly as Nevada’s first African American–owned and operated performing arts and education complex — a space built for inspiration, collaboration, education, and excellence. It is a cultural landmark rooted in history, powered by community, and designed for generations to come.

Our Purpose

More than just a stage, The Legacy Theatre of Excellence is a home for artists, students, families, and dreamers—uplifting the Las Vegas community while expanding its artistic footprint nationally and internationally, Within its walls are:

  • Professional classrooms & training studios
     

  • Rehearsal and performance spaces
     

  • A cultural museum honoring legendary African American entertainers across art, music, theatre, and sports and more!
     

  • Community rooms for outreach, learning, and engagement programs

This is a place where voices are nurtured, stories are honored, and new stories, new visions, and new artistry are brought to life.

Our Mission

Located in central Las Vegas, The Legacy Theatre of Excellence is dedicated to preserving the rich history of African Americans who paved the way in entertainment not just in Las Vegas, but across the world.

Our mission is to:

  • Serve as Las Vegas’ premier professional training facility, event and entertainment venue.

 

  • Provide a consistent and accessible home for Broadway In The HOOD
     

  • Offer year-round programming that uplifts youth, adults, and families
     

  • Ensure the arts remain inclusive, engaging, and accessible to the diverse Las Vegas community, embracing everyone from our youngest participants (age 10+) to our cherished elders.
     

  • Strengthen the connection between the performing arts and the broader community
     

  • Inspire future generations through education, mentorship, and cultural celebration
     

We exist to do more than showcase talent - we exist to build legacy, one story, one performance, and one generation at a time.
